Contract value:
£9.75 million
Scope of works:
Replacement of 1.8m diameter trunk sewer with associated overpumping system
Enabling Resilient Wastewater Infrastructure for Thames Water
Continuous operation of overpumping system for nearly two years
Capacity to handle 3,000 litres per second of wastewater flow
public disruption by eliminating road closures and lane rentals
Successful integration with the £1 billion development programme
Browne was appointed to deliver a key element of the £1 billion One Nine Elms & Nine Elms Square development, replacing a major section of Thames Water's 1.8m diameter trunk sewer—one of London’s largest. The £9.75 million project required innovative planning and close collaboration with stakeholders including Thames Water, TfL, and Wandsworth Council.
Browne installed an advanced overpumping system handling up to 3,000 litres per second, supported by extensive MEICA works. Operating in a tight urban site near the US Embassy, Browne kept the system running for nearly two years, preventing flooding and minimising disruption.
Urban Constraints
Working in a congested zone required early stakeholder engagement to maintain progress and secure approvals. Close collaboration with Thames Water’s IAB streamlined permits and ensured safe flow management.
Efficiency vs. Impact
To manage high overpumping costs, Browne refined system configurations and maintenance strategies, cutting both expenses and carbon emissions.
Safety Focus
Browne prioritised safety and compliance, with regular monitoring ensuring high standards in wastewater handling and avoiding delays.
Through careful planning and collaboration, Browne delivered a future-proof wastewater solution for the growing Nine Elms community. Replacing the trunk sewer within the site footprint avoided road closures and reduced public disruption, while maintaining service continuity for Thames Water.
The project showcases Browne’s ability to deliver complex infrastructure within major urban developments, integrating essential services with large-scale regeneration.
