Project Overview

Browne was appointed by Affinity Water to deliver the Hemel Road to Stonecross trunk main, a £5.8 million project designed to secure a sustainable water supply for St Albans while protecting the River Ver. The scheme involved installing 8km of new pipeline to reduce abstraction from sensitive chalk streams.

This included 3.3km of PE pipe laid across fields and 4.7km of ductile iron main through busy urban roads. As part of our established approach, early engagement with Hertfordshire Highways enabled a carefully phased programme that helped minimise road closures and reduce disruption to the local community.

Key Challenges & Solutions

Environmental Care

The route crossed environmentally sensitive areas, including the River Ver and protected habitats. Browne conducted early assessments, secured permits, and adapted methods to protect wildlife, including water voles and a badger sett.

Urban–Rural Delivery

Navigating varied landscapes, Browne used a phased approach to accelerate work and complete key sections ahead of highway resurfacing.

Safety Performance

With over 14,500 hours worked, the project was completed without incidents, supported by strong safety processes, audits, and team engagement.

Key Outcomes

  • Through innovation, collaboration, and a focus on sustainability, Browne delivered a future-proofed water supply for St Albans eight weeks ahead of schedule.
  • The project minimised disruption and strengthened network resilience while supporting Affinity Water’s goal to reduce chalk stream abstraction and protect the River Ver.
  • It highlights Browne’s expertise in large-scale water infrastructure with strong environmental and community focus.
