Scope of works:
Installation of district heating network with twin 450mm pipes
Delivering Sustainable Heating for a Thriving London Community
Twin 450mm heating pipes successfully installed in challenging urban environment
Successful conflict avoidance through 3D modelling and planning
Contributing to London's net-zero ambitions through sustainable infrastructure
Browne was appointed to deliver a district heating network as part of the Elephant & Castle regeneration, providing a low-carbon energy solution for homes, businesses, and public spaces. In a complex urban setting, Browne delivered innovation, e`iciency, and long-term value.
Challenges included dense utilities, high groundwater, and a live railway viaduct. With limited space and strict regulations, Browne used a 3D model of the Victorian station to identify underground conflicts early, enabling smooth installation of twin 450mm heating pipes through precise planning and coordination.
Underground Challenges
With dense utilities, groundwater, and railway infrastructure, Browne used 3D modelling to detect conflicts early, optimising routes and avoiding delays.
Reducing Disruption
In a busy urban area, Browne minimised road closures through trenchless techniques and worked with authorities to keep key routes open.
Stakeholder Coordination
Close collaboration with transport bodies, utilities, and local businesses kept the project on track while allowing daily activities to continue with minimal impact.
Through innovation and collaboration, Browne delivered a reliable heating network for Elephant & Castle, supporting the area’s shift to cleaner, more e`icient energy and contributing to London’s net- zero goals.
The project highlights Browne’s expertise in sustainable infrastructure, combining technical excellence with environmental responsibility to support urban regeneration and a low-carbon future.
